About Us

Mission

Established in 2006 as part of the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Center for Technology, Innovation and Community Engagement has two basic goals: (1) training a new generation of engineers who are socially responsible as well as technologically adept and (2) creating authentic partnerships between Columbia and the neighboring community.

A common thread uniting CTICE’s activities is the belief that real-world experience enhances the educational experience, at any level, and all CTICE activities utilize community-based learning to educate students. CTICE works to harness the intellectual and material resources available at Columbia University to increase capacity within Harlem and other neighboring communities.

CTICE develops, supports, and coordinates activities in three areas:

  1. Courses and Programs for Columbia Students, including the first-year design course, advanced engineering courses, interdisciplinary courses, and extensive co-curricular programming.
  2. K-12 Programming, including a K-12 Consortium with local community organizations and public schools, the Hayden Engineering and Applied Science Program, the Harlem Robotics League, Columbia Kids Care, and the Summer High School Program.
  3. Community Outreach Programming, including workforce development, the West Harlem Entrepreneurship and Technology Center (WHEAT), and the Computers for Communities program.
