Columbia Students

CTICE’s programming for Columbia University students use community-based learning to educate students for lives of social responsibility and civic engagement. Programming for students focuses on two areas: (1) for-credit courses and (2) co-curricular programming.

CTICE-supported, for-credit community-based learning courses include the following:

  • The First-Year Design Course, which is required for all SEAS undergraduates
  • Interdisciplinary courses, including V3310: “Science and Technology in Urban Environments” and W3010: “Science, Technology and Society”
  • E4998: “Managing Technological Innovation and Entrepreneurship” -- an advanced engineering course required of all undergraduates pursuing the minor in entrepreneurship

Columbia currently offers up to 16 credits of community-based learning courses in partnership with local not-for-profit groups, businesses, schools, and government agencies.

CTICE-supported, co-curricular programs include the following:

  • Inquiry House, a special residential community focused on civic engagement
  • The Columbia University Scholars Program (CUSP), which now expects a civic engagement project from all undergraduate scholars from Columbia College and SEAS

In developing these courses and programs, CTICE worked with the firm belief that real-world experience dramatically improves the educational experience for students in all disciplines. Taken together, the CTICE supported curriculum is one of the nation’s largest college-level community-based learning efforts, involving 600 students each year, awarding more than 1600 credits, and working on more than 100 community projects.
