Science and Technology in Urban Environments

Description: URBS V3310: “Science and Technology in Urban Environments” is an Urban Studies course offered through CTICE. The course examines the role of science and technology in cities from the Industrial Revolution to the present. Using examples from Western Europe and the United States, the course explores not only how technology has shaped towns and cities but also how urban environments, have influenced the development, acceptance, and application of technology. Lectures focus on the creation of an effective urban infrastructure, including canals, bridges, and sanitation and water systems; the development of transportation networks, including mass transportation systems and automobility; and modern alternative technologies.

Community-Based Learning Project: An essential part of your coursework is participation in a community-based learning project, completed for real clients in the community. Clients from earlier semesters have included the New York City Mayor’s Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability,  the 125th Stree Business Improvement District, Intermediate School 143, and the New York City Parks Department. Projects and clients will be assigned in late September, with deliverables due at the end of the semester.

Instructors: Jack McGourty and Timothy Cross

Schedule: The course will be offered next in Fall 2008.

Time: Monday/Wednesday; 10:35-11:50 a.m.
