Engineering Design via Community Service Projects

Description: This hands-on, community-based learning course, which is modeled on the SEAS first-year design experience, is designed for high school students planning to study engineering and applied science, computer science, applied physics, and applied mathematics in college. The course is offered through the Columbia School of Continuing Education’s Summer Program for High School Students.

Students learn design by working on real, socially oriented projects for not-for-profit organizations near Columbia. They work in the field, and in Columbia’s state-of-the-art Botwinick Multimedia Learning Laboratory, where they apply advanced computer technologies – such as computer-aided modeling, computational techniques, and Web applications.

As students pursue their design projects, they learn personal and professional skills, including how to work in teams, creative thinking, making oral and written presentations, and managing projects. Instructors, peers, clients, and University staff provide ongoing feedback and support

The program not only provides high school students with the opportunity to complete real-world engineering design projects but also encourages them to consider the human and social implications of engineering and applied science.
