Service Learning in a Community Environment (SLICE)
Description: Through the Service Learning in a Community Environment (SLICE) program, CTICE offers qualified residents from Harlem and other neighboring communities the chance learn computer skills that can lead to information technology careers. SLICE is designed for unemployed and under-employed local residents who wish to pursue a challenging new career.
The 16-month certification program, which is free to all participants, emphasizes learning by doing. SLICE students work in teams, completing real projects for clients in the local community. Through SLICE students learn how to design and maintain websites, interact with clients, work in teams, ask for and cultivate feedback, solve problems, and communicate effectively. The program provides career mentoring and academic advising support to help all SLICE students succeed.
SLICE helps its students find employment through a strategic alliance with WorkForce OutSource Services (WOS). After finishing one semester, WOS helps students find part-time IT employment so they can begin their careers while completing their studies. Upon completion, students receive a certificate from Columbia University.
SLICE graduates currently work at Prudential Financial, AIG, and WNET/Thirteen, among other companies.
