Columbia Kids Care
Columbia Kids Care is a community-based learning camp for middle school students held at the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science each summer. Through Columbia Kids Care, students learn about teamwork, leadership, project planning, and civic engagement.
During the two-week-long program, students evaluate a community situation, then develop and complete their own community service project to address the problem.
In 2007, CTICE partnered with Concrete Safaris, a local not-for-profit group, in a Columbia Kids Care program to design a garden for Union Settlement’s Youth Services Facility. The project was designed to promote physical wellness as well as community engagement. The program addressed the need for youth to develop leadership skills and improve both personal and community health in Harlem. The project aided the community, tackled local health concerns, and enriched the lives of participating students.
Eligibility: Middle school students, aged 9–13.
Cost: Free of charge for qualified applicants.
Next Offered: The summer 2008 Columbia Kids Care program is in the planning stages. Please check back for more information.
